NAV NOTICE SWL 13-03 - MKARNS - CHANGE TO SCHEDULED DAILY CLOSURES

Published Jan. 4, 2013

This notice revises Navigation Notices SWL 12-44 and TD 2012-10.

Effective January 07, 2013, there will be a change to the scheduled daily maintenance closures at Ozark-Jeta Taylor Lock and Dam (No. 12) NM 256.8, James W. Trimble Lock and Dam (No. 13) NM 292.8, Webber Falls Lock and Dam (No. 16) NM 366.6, Chouteau Lock and Dam (No. 17) NM 401.4, and Newt Graham Lock and Dam (No. 18) NM 421.6.

This change will be effective for 30 days, from January 7, 2013 through February 5, 2013.  During this time two e-mails, one each from Tulsa and Little Rock Districts, will be issued daily with maintenance closure times for the following day.  These e-mails will be issued using the current Navigation Notice distribution lists.

The start of a daily maintenance period may be delayed to complete a lockage that is underway, or to lock a commercial vessel that is within the arrival area before the start time.  The maintenance period may be suspended to accommodate a lockage needed by emergency personnel or for a scheduled special event.

For Ozark and Trimble locks only, recreational vessel lockages will be accommodated after the first four hours of maintenance closure is complete.  For example, if closure is scheduled one day from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., recreational vessel lockages would be accommodated after 11 a.m.

The intent of this temporary change is to maintain the same amount of maintenance closure hours per week, but achieving it as quickly as possible, and providing greater flexibility in accommodating tow traffic.  Once a lock has achieved its established hours for the week it will be available 24/7 for lockages for the balance of that week.  Each week begins on a Monday.

During this period, commercial operators are encouraged to contact Mr. Steve Taylor of Johnstonports (phone number (918) 266-2942 x102, staylor@johnstonports.com) with estimated arrival times for their vessels at these locks.  Mr. Taylor will be using this information to provide the Corps with recommended start/end times for the daily maintenance closures.

Mariners transiting the area should contact the locks on channel 16 to confirm the exact closure times each day.  Members of the public may contact the locks by telephone for a recorded update of the daily maintenance period beginning and end times.  Telephone numbers for the locks are

Ozark  (479) 667-2120

Trimble  (479) 452-0488

Webber Falls  (918) 489-5987

Chouteau  (918) 687-4501
