LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, is making further adjustments to spillway operations at Norfork Dam as water levels continue to rise due to recent heavy rainfall.

At 3:30 p.m., the remaining three spillway gates were opened, bringing the total to all twelve gates open half a foot. This increase will result in a spillway release of approximately 6,600 cubic feet per second. The total water release, including hydropower operations, will be approximately 12,000 c.f.s.

This release will continue until the flood pool crests and recedes to elevation 579’, in accordance with the established water control plan. The top of the flood pool on Norfork Lake is elevation 580’. The flood pool is currently at 579.61’ and rising.

The highest recorded pool level at Norfork Dam occurred on April 11, 2008, at elevation 581.01’. The second-highest level was recorded on May 2, 2008, at elevation 580.9’.

Understanding Surcharge Storage: Surcharge storage is additional flood storage created by operating an overflow spillway. Gated spillways provide temporary extra storage when opened, allowing controlled releases to maximize flood management. Ungated spillways function differently, where water only flows over when lake levels exceed the spillway elevation.

Local emergency management officials downstream have been notified and are actively coordinating with their communities to ensure safety measures are in place. Public safety remains our highest priority, and we urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow guidance from local officials.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will continue closely monitoring conditions and adjusting operations as necessary. Further updates will be provided as circumstances evolve.
