LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District awards Voith Hydro a nearly $50 million contract to modernize the hydropower units at Norfork Dam in Baxter County, Ark.
USACE is proactively rehabilitating the hydropower units to extend their service life. Rehabilitation work is scheduled to begin this fall and projected to last through May 2028.
The project is fully funded through a partnership with Southwestern Power Administration and Southwestern Power Resources Association.
Originally completed in 1949, the Norfork Dam powerhouse features two turbine generator units that have a combined rated generating capacity of 92,600 kilowatts and produce an estimated average annual energy amount of 184 million kilowatt-hours. The kilowatt-hours produced is enough to power around 17,000 homes.
The dam’s authorized purposes include Flood Risk Management, Hydropower, Municipal Water Supply, Environmental Stewardship and Recreation.
