USACE awards contract to modernize Norfork Dam hydropower units

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District awards Voith Hydro a nearly $50 million contract to modernize the hydropower units at Norfork Dam in Baxter County, Ark.

USACE is proactively rehabilitating the hydropower units to extend their service life. ​Rehabilitation work is scheduled to begin this fall and projected to last through May 2028.

The project is fully funded through a partnership with Southwestern Power Administration and Southwestern Power Resources Association.

Originally completed in 1949, the Norfork Dam powerhouse features two turbine generator units that have a combined rated generating capacity of 92,600 kilowatts and produce an estimated average annual energy amount of 184 million kilowatt-hours. The kilowatt-hours produced is​ enough to power around 17,000 homes.

The dam’s authorized purposes include Flood Risk Management, Hydropower, Municipal Water Supply, Environmental Stewardship and Recreation.
