Dewey Short Visitor Center

BRANSON, Mo. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Dewey Short Visitor Center at Table Rock Lake is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during February. A self-guided children’s activity area is available when the visitor center is open.

In addition, several park ranger led programs are planned for the month of February. All programs begin at the visitor center, are free, open to the public, and no registration is required.

Become a citizen-scientist and part of the worldwide Great Backyard Bird Count Feb. 16- 19.  This annual event asks bird watchers to collect data that scientists will use to create a “real-time snapshot” of the locations of birds around the world. Scientists use this information to understand how populations of birds are changing from year to year. The Visitor Center will have bird count sheets and rangers available to provide expert help on how to be part of this great program. In addition, the Visitor Center will offer Backyard Bird Count Hikes at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 16 and again at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Bring the family to the visitor center from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3 to test your nature knowledge in a human-sized board game.

Bundle up for a winter ranger hike at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9 and 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24 to learn more about what local wildlife are up to in the winter woods. The trail has an asphalt surface and follows the lake’s shoreline. Difficulty is easy and we will be walking about one half to1 total mile (varies by audience). Meet at the Lakeshore trailhead. This walk lasts 30-40 minutes and is appropriate for all ages.

Table Rock Dam Talk will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, Feb. 8, 15, and 22. Have you seen the movie but have more questions? Then join us for a talk about the building and operating of Table Rock Dam and find the answers to those elusive questions. This program will last 30-45 minutes and is appropriate for all ages.

At 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, learn about hydropower and examine some of the construction photos from the 1950s to see how hydropower is produced at Table Rock Dam.  This program will last 30-45 minutes. It is open to all ages, but most suitable for ages 10 and up.

Some programs may be cancelled because of weather. For more information or to verify that a program has not been cancelled, please contact the visitor center at 501-340-1943.

All programs will begin at Dewey Short Visitor Center unless designated with an *. Nature hikes will begin at the Lakeshore Trailhead accessible from the Dewey Short Visitor Center parking lot.
