Corps announces December Programs at Dewey Short Visitor Center

BRANSON, Mo. -- Between now and mid-December, the Army Corps of Engineers rangers are offering several programs at the Dewey Short Visitor Center on Table Rock Lake.  Beginning Dec. 15 visitor center will close and will reopen Jan. 2, 2018.

All programs are free and open to the public.  Unless otherwise noted, programs begin at Dewey Short Visitor Center.

Table Rock Dam talk will be offered at 2 p.m. on Dec. 1 and 6.  Have you seen the movie but have more questions? Want to know more facts and figures?  Confused about how something works? Then join us for a talk about the building and operating of Table Rock Dam and find the answers to those elusive questions.  This program will last 30-45 minutes and is appropriate for all ages.

Visit with a park ranger at the overlook at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7 and 8.  The ranger will be available to answer questions and point out features of the dam and powerhouse. Visitors can come and go. Meet at the overlook off Highway 165, just across the highway/dam from Dewey Short Visitor Center.  The ranger will be on-site for 30 minutes and this is appropriate for all ages.

A ranger walk will be conducted at 1 p.m.  Dec. 3 and 13.  A park ranger will join you on the Lakeshore Trail to talk about the plants, animals, and ecology of Table Rock Lake. The trail has an asphalt surface and follows the lake’s shoreline. Difficulty is easy and we will be walking about ½ - 1 mile total (varies by audience). Meet at the Lakeshore Trailhead.  This walk lasts 30-40 minutes and is appropriate for all ages.

Mammal mania will be held from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9.  See if you can match a mammal’s skin (fur), skull, track, and scat (poop).  The room will be open all day for participants to come and go.  Materials will be arranged on tables to see and touch.  A park ranger will be on hand to answer questions.  This program is appropriate for all ages.

Some programs may be cancelled because of weather. For more information or to verify that a program has not been cancelled, please call the visitor center at 501-340-1943. The center is currently open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but may close because of winter weather. The center will be closed from Dec. 15 until Jan. 2, 2018.

All programs will begin at Dewey Short Visitor Center unless designated with an asterisk. Ranger walks will begin at the Lakeshore Trailhead accessible from the Dewey Short Visitor Center parking lot. Ranger at the Overlook will be held at the Dam Overlook off of Highway 165 across the highway from Dewey Short Visitor Center.
