Mariners are advised that shoaling near NM 9.7 and NM 9.8 have caused unfavorable conditions for commercial navigation. Several recent groundings have taken place in this area downstream of Norrell Lock No. 1. Preliminary assessments of the hydrographic survey which was performed today, indicate the depth across the full width of the navigation channel is as shallow as 7.6 feet in some areas. Dredging and clamming options are currently being evaluated in order to re-establish the required navigation depths in the area. Rainfall predicted for next week could also aid in alleviating the shallow depth problem. When a decision is made on the most feasible option, an update to this notice will be provided.
The hydrographic survey crew plans to perform additional reconnaissance surveys from NM 9.3 downstream to Montgomery Point L&D. If shoaling is observed in this reach, a separate navigation notice will be issued advising of the condition.
Questions or requests for additional information concerning this notice should be directed to the Little Rock District Office, at (501) 324-5739 or you may email CESWL-OP-OM@usace.army.mil.
