General Information

Day use fees, annual passes, and visitor information for Norfork Lake facilities

Day Use Fees Required: Access to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recreation facilities may require a day use fee.

Fee information and campsite reservations can be found at Recreation.gov. Day use fees and USACE annual passes may be purchased at each facility.

America the Beautiful passes are accepted at Norfork Lake USACE facilities and may be purchased online or at participating federal recreation sites.

Concessionaire-operated marinas provide boat and motor rental, fuel, tackle, and related supplies and services at several parks around the lake. The area has a wide range of accommodations and services — contact area chambers of commerce for lodging and dining information.

Campgrounds

6 USACE campgrounds with electric hookups, swim beaches, boat ramps, and more

6 USACE Campgrounds are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers around Norfork Lake. All main roads to the lake and within campgrounds are paved, making them accessible to RVs and trailers.

Reservations: USACE parks can be reserved at Recreation.gov. Book early — parks fill quickly on holiday weekends.

Boating

Open water sailing, skiing, and wakeboarding — with marinas and public ramps throughout the lake

Norfork Lake's wide open main channel stretches offer excellent conditions for sailing, while secluded coves throughout the lake's 380-mile shoreline are ideal for skiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing. Concessionaire-operated marinas provide boat and motor rental, fuel, and related supplies at several parks.

Safety Guidelines

  • Learn and follow small craft navigation rules
  • Obey Arkansas state boating laws and regulations
  • Take a Boating Education Course — required for operators born after January 1, 1986
  • Have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved flotation device for each person on board
  • Watch for shallow water and obstructions near shore and in coves
  • Head for shore immediately if bad weather threatens
  • Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Fishing

World-class bass, crappie, walleye, and striped bass fishing — day and night

Exceptional Fishing: Norfork Lake is known as a great fishing destination with 22,000 surface acres of clear Ozark water. Night fishing for crappie and white bass using lights is increasingly popular.

Fishing Access

  • Fish from a boat, pier, or shore throughout the lake
  • Bidwell Point is noted as one of the best striped bass fisheries in northern Arkansas
  • Dam-Quarry Park provides premium tailwater access below Norfork Dam
  • Night fishing with lights is permitted and popular at multiple parks

Swimming

Designated swim beaches at multiple parks — clear Ozark waters, no lifeguards on duty

Norfork Lake's clear, uncrowded waters make it a favorite for swimming. Designated swim beaches are located at Cranfield, Gamaliel, Bidwell Point, and Panther Bay parks.

Safety Notice: No lifeguards are on duty at Norfork Lake swim beaches. Swim at your own risk.

Safety Guidelines

  • Swim in designated areas only
  • Never swim alone
  • Wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, especially for children and weak swimmers
  • Do not rely on inflatable toys or pool floats as life-saving devices
  • Know your swimming ability — Norfork Lake can reach depths of 178 feet
  • Watch children at all times; designate a Water Watcher
  • Exit the water immediately if bad weather approaches

Scuba Diving

Norfork Lake's exceptional water clarity attracts scuba divers from throughout the central United States. Diving equipment is available through concessionaire marinas on the lake. Always follow standard dive safety practices and never dive alone.

Hiking & Nature Trails

7 named trails through Ozark terrain — wildlife viewing, wildflowers, and fall color

The 32,000 acres of public land surrounding Norfork Lake provide year-round access to the Ozark Mountains through an extensive network of trails. Spring brings flowering trees, shrubs, and wildflowers; fall sets the oak and hickory ridges ablaze with color.

Each trail provides access to a different habitat type around the lake — from wooded ridges and limestone bluffs to shoreline coves and creek bottoms.

Wildlife Viewing: The wooded, mostly undeveloped shoreline supports abundant wildlife year-round. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, migratory songbirds, bald eagles, and waterfowl are commonly observed from the trail system.

Hunting

32,000 acres of public land open to hunting — deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game

The 32,000 acres of public land surrounding Norfork Lake provide excellent hunting opportunities. Hunting and trapping are permitted on Corps-managed waters and lands, subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Prohibited Areas: Hunting is not permitted within developed parks or areas marked with appropriate signage. Always check boundary markers before hunting.

  • Small Game: Squirrel, rabbit, quail
  • Migratory Birds & Waterfowl: Doves, ducks, and geese

Some areas are cooperatively managed with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and volunteer organizations to maximize benefits for both game and non-game wildlife.

Tree Stand Regulations

  • Permanent stands are prohibited — no devices that penetrate or damage bark
  • Portable stands must be marked with owner's name and address
  • May not be hung earlier than one week before season opens
  • Must be removed within one week after season closes
  • Always wear a safety harness when using tree stands

Wise management of natural resources on and around Norfork Lake is essential to maintaining the high-quality environment that visitors and wildlife depend on. The public land surrounding the lake serves as a critical buffer — ensuring high-quality water and providing habitat for the abundant wildlife and plant communities found here.

Some areas are cooperatively managed to provide maximum benefits for both game and non-game wildlife species, including songbirds, raptors, reptiles, and amphibians.

Leave No Trace: Please help protect Norfork Lake's natural resources. Avoid damaging trees and plants. Properly dispose of all refuse. Take only photographs and memories; leave only footprints.

Special Event Permits

Host organized events at Norfork Lake — permits required for special activities

Great Event Venue: Norfork Lake's parks and shoreline are excellent settings for organized events of all types.

When a Permit Is Required

A Special Use Permit is required for any organized event or activity on Corps-managed lands that goes beyond normal public recreational use. This includes events with commercial components, large gatherings, or activities that could impact other visitors or park resources.
