Recreation Activities

Recreation opportunities for visitors to the lower White River and pools of the Arkansas River are rich and varied. The White River National Wildlife Refuge abounds in waterfowl, deer, turkey, squirrel, other wildlife and fish. For information concerning hunting and fishing opportunities, write the White River National Wildlife Refuge, P.O. Box 308, 321 W. 7th, Dewitt, Arkansas 72042. Also adjoining the White River is the Trusten Holder Wildlife Management Area. Information concerning the hunting opportunities on Trusten Holder can be obtained by writing the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, No. 2 Natural Resources Drive, Little Rock , Arkansas 72205. The White River, Arkansas Post Canal, Merrisach Lake and the Arkansas River provide excellent in-season waterfowl hunting along with year-round fishing for bass, catfish, bream and crappie. Anglers find great success whether fishing from boats or the river banks.

Parks along the river upstream from Lock No. 2 and Wilbur D. Mills Dam provide boat launching ramps, drinking water, camping areas, picnic sites for families and groups, and other facilities for the convenience of all. Marinas, operated by private enterprise, at Pendleton, Pine Bluff, Little Rock and North Little Rock provide boat storage, boat and motor rentals, fuel, food, and other boating supplies and services.

For additional detailed information on overnight lodging, eating accommodations and other recreational opportunities, write the local Chambers of Commerce.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Arkansas hope that your visit will be enjoyable and that you will return often.
