Definition: A Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) is property that was formerly owned, leased, possessed by, or operated by, or under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense within the 50 states, territories, commonwealths, and possessions over which the U.S. has jurisdiction.
The FUDS program addresses environmental contamination and safety hazards that may remain at properties where the Department of Defense conducted activities in the past. Projects at FUDS are subject to specific policy and eligibility rules designed to protect public health and the environment.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the investigation and cleanup of these sites to ensure they are safe for current and future use by communities and property owners.
