What is FUDS?

Understanding the Formerly Used Defense Sites program and its mission

FUDS Program Logo
Definition: A Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) is property that was formerly owned, leased, possessed by, or operated by, or under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense within the 50 states, territories, commonwealths, and possessions over which the U.S. has jurisdiction.

The FUDS program addresses environmental contamination and safety hazards that may remain at properties where the Department of Defense conducted activities in the past. Projects at FUDS are subject to specific policy and eligibility rules designed to protect public health and the environment.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the investigation and cleanup of these sites to ensure they are safe for current and future use by communities and property owners.

Status of investigations and remediation efforts across Arkansas

82 Sites Investigated across Arkansas have been thoroughly evaluated to determine whether environmental or safety hazards remain from Department of Defense occupancy.

Investigation Results

Good news: The majority of Arkansas FUDS sites were found to have no remaining hazards from previous Department of Defense activities.

However, some sites did require remediation for:

  • Underground Storage Tanks (UST): Fuel and chemical storage infrastructure
  • Unexploded Ordnance (UXO): Military munitions that failed to detonate
  • Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW): Contaminated materials from military operations

Current Status

The Arkansas FUDS program continues to monitor and address sites as needed, ensuring long-term protection of public health and environmental safety.

Types of Hazards

Understanding the environmental and safety concerns addressed by FUDS

Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)

Military munitions that were fired, dropped, or placed but failed to detonate as intended. UXO can pose serious safety risks and requires specialized removal techniques.

Safety Notice: If you encounter suspected military munitions, do not touch or move them. Contact local authorities immediately.

Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW)

Contaminated materials that may include:

  • Chemical contaminants from military operations
  • Petroleum products and solvents
  • Heavy metals and other toxic substances
  • Low-level radioactive materials

Underground Storage Tanks (UST)

Fuel and chemical storage systems that may have leaked contaminants into soil or groundwater. These tanks and associated piping require proper removal and site remediation.
