    Beaver Lake – supporting NWA growth and protecting the White River Basin against flooding

    Created after the 1966 completion of the Beaver Dam, the lake was part of a comprehensive flood control plan meant to protect the White River Basin. Working as a single system, the lakes of the basin were meant to reduce both the frequency and severity of floods both in the region and downstream as the White eventually joins the Mississippi River.

    Branson, MO- For the thousands of guests visiting Table Rock Lake each year no visit would be complete without stopping by the visitor center featuring a state-of-the art interactive map of the lake, wall murals and a replica of an Ozark bluff.

    Seth Fisher, natural resource specialist with Little Rock District U.S Army Corps of Engineers conducts a school tour with a group of local children from Heber Springs, Arkansas on October 27. Fisher is a new employee with the Little Rock District and used his passion of the outdoors for a career in natural resources. The central Arkansas native spend his childhood on his grandparents’ 500 acre farm and knew during his adolescents that he would later grow up and work in nature.

    As a young boy growing up on a 500 acre farm in central Arkansas, Seth Fisher, a natural resource specialist with Little Rock District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spent most his childhood playing endlessly outside or in the woods.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District Contracting Division continues to lead the way. Earlier this year the contracting division was presented the Excellence in Contracting District of the Year Award by Lt. Gen. Thomas Bostick, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commanding general.

    Dean Erickson, Little Rock District’s Chief of Logistics, presents a crystal Corps Castle to Henry Hollins in appreciation for his service and dedication to duty. Hollins served as the District’s facility manager for more than 20 years.

    Half a Century of Dedication, Duty to Our Nation

    Retiring after more than 20 years of service to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is no small feat and deserves proper recognition for dedicated service. Retiring for the second time in a career that spanned 51 years of total federal service commands respect and admiration from most if not all who hear the story.

    The Little Rock District is actively engaging the public in its effort to update the 1970s version of the Bull Shoals Lake Master Plan. The agency currently hosted five public scoping workshops around Bull Shoals Lake to share information about the revision process and to collect public comments concerning potential development and land use management around the project. A master plan is the guidance document that describes how the resources of the lake will be managed in the future and provides the vision for how the lake should look in the future.

  • The M/V Mississippi moored in North Little Rock, Ark during the Mississippi River Commission’s low-water inspection of the McClellan -Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System Aug. 10 through 14. The commission met with stakeholders onboard the largest towboat in the country and the official vessel of the MRC.

    USA’s largest towboat returns to Arkansas River

    The Mississippi River Commission visited the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System Aug. 10 through 14 to perform a low-water inspection and meet with stakeholders onboard the Motor Vessel Mississippi, the largest towboat in the country and the official vessel of the MRC. The vessel is 241 feet long, 52 feet high and is an operational towboat 90 percent of the time.

    National Dam Safety Awareness Day

    On May 31, 1889 South Fork Dam in Johnstown, Pennsylvania failed, killing 2,200 people and leaving thousands more homeless. National Dam Safety Awareness Day occurs each year on May 31 to commemorate this disaster, which remains the worst dam failure in the history of the United States, and to encourage the public to learn about the benefits of dams and the risks associated with potential dam incidents and failures.

    McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System

    Who and what is the MKARNS Board of Governance?

    Within U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division a board of governance for the 445-mile McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System has been established to corporately manage the system.
  • Mark Dixson, a supervisory electrical engineer with the Little Rock District, explains his specialty to a group of Cub Scouts at a science, technology, engineering and mathematics event in Bryant, Ark. Dixson showed the Scouts how to produce an electrical circuit with a battery. “I have worked with the Boy and Cub Scouts for more than 20 years,” said Dixson. “I believe I get more enjoyment out of teaching them, than what the Scouts get by learning about electrical engineering.”

  • Little Rock District Deputy District Counsel Ralph Allen stands with a movie poster for “The Monuments Men,” a current film about the dangerous job his grandfather, Ralph W. Hammett, held during World War II.

    A Monument Man

    When Deputy Counsel Ralph Allen from the Little Rock District Corps of Engineers was 13-years-old his grandfather took him on a tour through Europe explaining what the United States and Allies endured during World War II. What Allen didn’t know as boy is that his grandfather was a Monuments Man charged with preserving the history and architecture of the war torn country during the world’s darkest hours. The recent release of George Clooney’s new film “Monuments Men,” has propelled Allen and his family to research the legacy of their beloved grandfather.

    The 10 hunters spotted 60 deer with seven of them taking a shot. Two deer were harvested during the hunt.

    2013 Ozark Isle Youth Hunt

    Park rangers from the Mountain Home Project Office braved 20 mph winds and 30 degree temperatures on Jan. 4 to ensure 10 youth hunters from around the state could participate in the 2013 Ozark Isle Youth Hunt.

    STEM: Little Rock District teams up with University of Pine Bluff

    The Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District recently signed a partnership agreement with the oldest historically black institution of higher education in Arkansas. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, established in 1873, and the district signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics enrichment programs to increase the number of well‐prepared underrepresented minority STEM graduates for careers in STEM professions.
