BOAT
TRAILERS NEED MAINTENANCE BEFORE YOU HEAD TO THE LAKE
CLEARWATER
LAKE, April 18 -- With warm weather upon us, many people are getting
in the mood to hook up to the boat and spend a day on Clearwater Lake.
Before the boat ever leaves the driveway, one must first consider the
routine maintenance required to ensure the boat trailer makes it to
the lake.
Boat trailers for the most part are the least of a boater's concerns,
but if they are not maintained properly, a trip to the lake may become
very dangerous. A possible trouble spot with boat trailers is wheel
bearings. Trailer wheel bearings need only occasional care unless the
wheels are in water often or are traveling dusty or sandy roads, but
they do need attention.
To determine when bearings need maintenance, feel the wheel hubs after
pulling the trailer a long distance. If they are hot to the touch, the
bearings need to be checked and repacked.
It is wise to repack the bearings at the beginning of each boating season
or before traveling any distance. Lithium grease protects well against
friction and is available at most hardware or auto supply stores.
An easier route to repacking is the installation of bearing protectors.
They will keep water and dirt out of the bearings. They have a grease
fitting that provides a quick and reliable lubricant-level check. They
don’t require repacking, and they have a relief valve to protect seals
and prevent overfilling.
Taking along an extra set of wheel bearings, a jack, a lug wrench and
water resistant grease is a good idea on long hauls. Also, keep the
tires in good condition by inflating properly.
The staff at Clearwater Lake looks forward to seeing you this season
and wants your trip to be as safe and enjoyable as possible.
