High Water Safety at Corps Lakes
May 1, 2011

Flooding rains have caused several Little Rock District lakes and rivers to rise to unusually high levels.  Many recreation areas are being impacted, although recreation is still possible.  However, extra precautions should be taken to ensure a safe visit.

Boaters
*Boaters visiting Corps lakes should slow down and be extra cautious to avoid objects you would not normally expect in the water.
* When boating near the shore, beware of hidden underwater hazards.  Look for submerged sign posts, picnic tables, table canopies and other structures often found in a campground or picnic area.  Watch out for submerged trees and stumps that are normally on dry ground.
* Floating logs, trees, trash and debris of all sizes can be anywhere in the lake for the next month or so.
* Have an observer in the boat when possible, always wear a life jacket and use your kill switch.
* Avoid boating at night.  Obstructions are even more difficult to see.

Swimmers
* Do not dive or jump into a lake from bluffs, picnic tables or trees because of the potential for striking submerged obstacles or debris such as rock ledges, steel picnic grills or large tree limbs.
* Many swim beaches are flooded and unusable.  If you wade or swim elsewhere in the lake, wear a life jacket.  There is no way to tell how deep the water is, or where drop-offs or underwater obstructions are hiding.  Your next step could be your last.

Dock Owners
* Officials urge boat dock owners to check their docks frequently as lake levels fluctuate to move them in and out as required and to ensure anchors and cables are securely attached to the dock.
* Recent high winds, high water and strong currents have increased the number of cable breaks and loose docks on the lakes and rivers.

Arkansas River
* High and dangerous flows are being experienced on the Arkansas River.  A small craft advisory is in effect.
* For your own safety, please do not boat on the Arkansas River until flows recede below 70,000 cubic feet per second.

Park Facility Availabilities

* Little Rock District will be posting information about park facility availabilities on its Homepage at www.swl.usace.army.mil.
