Shipping
from Arkansas and Oklahoma to Ports of the World
If you have never shipped by waterway before, the Oklahoma Department of
Transportation Waterways Office and the Marketing Division of the Arkansas Economic
Development Commission will be happy to work with your company and its needs.
Many companies interested in shipping by water will have a traffic department and be
knowledgeable about inter-modal transportation facilities, rates, schedules and similar
matters.
For the new shipper, an understanding of charges and freight rates will help make
transportation by water much easier. Common carriers are certified to serve the
McClellan-Kerr, providing service to all points on the inland waterways system and
the intercoastal canal. Any of these barge operators can provide rate information and make
arrangements for shipment by water.
If a shipper does not have its own loading or unloading facilities, a general purpose or
public terminal at point of origin or destination may be contacted for rates and
arrangements to handle shipments. Normally, there is a charge on each end - one for loading
services and one for unloading services. These charges are in addition to the charges by
the barge line.
If a shipper desires to export its product, a list of freight rates, services and charges
which are peculiar to ocean shipping may be obtained from an appropriate steamship line,
steamship conference, or an independent ocean freight forwarder. The freight forwarder
will perform, on behalf of the exporter, one or more of the following:
. provide cost quotations and assist new exporters in learning procedures;
. arrange for packing, space, and deliveries;
. arrange for cargo insurance; and
. prepare export license applications, ocean bills of lading, consular documents, cargo
invoices, and distribute documents.
