Travel Tips for Airline Passengers

In the wake of the attacks in New York City and Washington D.C., every traveler must be prepared for the changes which have occurred.  The biggest concern is safety and security, and because of this, travelers must understand that it's going to take time to get into the air.  Here are some basics for air travel.

1.   Before you leave your home, remember that most airlines are either restricting or completely doing away with most carry-on baggage.  Take anything out of your carry-ons, purses, and pockets to include scissors, knives, manicure items or other sharp items which the security guards could consider dangerous.  Cell phones and other electronic equipment will be x-rayed and carefully scrutinized.

2.   Upon arrival, you will find that there is no curbside service.  Many airports will allow only commercial vehicles into the terminal drop off areas.  All baggage must go through security.  Make sure you have a picture ID with you at all times. There will be over 1,700 plain clothes security personnel at airports conducting random searches and ID checks.

3.   If you are e-ticketed and do not have anything showing this, there are two easy ways to get this information.  You can call Traci Garman at 324-6612, for a copy of your itinerary and confirmation, or you can go online to: http://www.virtuallythere.com and follow the directions to download your own information.

4.   Flights will be disrupted for at least a few weeks and it is important that each traveler checks with the scheduled airline or the airport from which they are flying.  Airport and related security information can be obtained at: http://www.virtuallythere.com/bulletin .

Phone numbers for the airlines are:

5.   Allow yourself plenty of time before your flight.  Until the new policies are completely implemented and your fellow travelers get used to the new regulations, it's going to take you up to two hours to go from the door of the terminal to the door of the aircraft.  Be patient, keep yourself updated, and you will have a safe, enjoyable flight.   Always be situationally aware.
