Fayetteville Shale Information


The Fayetteville Shale Play Area encompasses three Corps of Engineers Districts:
Little Rock District, Memphis District, and Vicksburg District. Gas exploration began in the Fayetteville Shale Play Area in 2006. Presently, approximately five counties (White, Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, and Van Buren) within the Little Rock District geographic boundaries are being impacted by the gas drilling operations.

Little Rock District Regulatory Division is dedicated to protecting the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the waters of the United States located in the Fayetteville Shale Play Area in Arkansas. Additionally, the Corps is responsible for expediting energy projects to comply with an Executive Order.

The mission of the Corps of Engineers Regulatory Program is to protect the Nation’s aquatic resources, while allowing reasonable development through fair, flexible, and balanced permit decisions.
