LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District is urging the community to keep off of levees throughout Arkansas after historic amounts of water saturated the levees.
“The levees have never been tested by this much water before and are extremely saturated right now,” said Col. Robert Dixon, Little Rock District commander. “We need to continue to work together as a community and help keep pressure off the levees by not driving personal vehicles or ATVs on top of them.”
While the public will begin to see the flood waters receding, the water that is saturating the levees may not be noticeable. The Corps urges the community to be aware that even if the levee looks dry, it still may be very saturated and will need additional time to drain.
The Corps has received multiple reports of personal trucks and other personal motorized vehicles driving on top of levees within the past week. The pressure, vibrations and tread marks from these motorized vehicles can cause additional issues for an already saturated levee.
Local, county, state and federal agencies are working hard to monitor and maintain the levees and should be the only ones atop the levees. The Corps is currently providing technical expertise to local and county levee boards who maintain the levees to assist in the flood fighting efforts.
