Mariners were previously notified in Navigation Notice SWL 14-31, that one
of the ten crest gates in the navigation pass was experiencing problems; it
was partially raised at elevation 105 and could not be lowered further.
This gate currently remains in the partially raised position. Vessels with
drafts deeper than 9 feet run the risk of striking this gate as the water
level decreases.
To restore the gate's full range of motion, the navigation pass will be
closed the next time the Montgomery Point tailwater reaches elevation 117
and is forecasted to continue falling. Once the nav pass is closed the
crest gates will be raised and exercised. During the navigation pass
closure all vessels will be required to use the lock. Normal operational
procedures will resume when the gate can be lowered completely. Vessels are
encouraged to contact Montgomery Point Lock and Dam on Channel 16 or visit
http://www.swl-wc.usace.army.mil/pages/reports/remote/navrpt.htm for further
information and Montgomery Point tailwater elevations.
